Runners seek to promote healthy lifestyle and raise money to help children’s hospitals

Charity run in Ukraine. 7,000 people from 43 countries participated in half marathon in Kyiv. Among them were kids, grownups, and even pensioners. The purpose of the event was to raise money to help sick children.

The marathon started early in the morning. There were no special rules and no limits. Everyone willing to participate could participate.

Uliana completed two-kilometer distance – all that in a wheelchair. She even managed to outrun some other contestants. The girl says she decided to take part in the tournament for herself and for other children.

Uliana, Kyiv half-marathon participant: “What’s the most important that today we supported kids and that you see a lot of people who are involved in charity, I believe it is really great.”

One of Uliana’s competitors is the mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko. He says such races are a part of his life. He used to go for a run when he was a boxer, now he does it just for fun. By participating in the charity half marathon Klitschko wants to engage people in sports activity.

Vitali Klitschko, Kyiv Mayor: “I like to see that lots of people decided to join us. Please, I welcome everybody. It’s really not difficult at all, and it’s good for your body.”

This is the sixth half marathon that takes place in Kyiv. Organizers prepared for the contestants 13 different routes. The longest one is about 21 kilometers. Participants say running is a great way to get rid of stress.

Marichka Padalko, TV presenter and Kyiv half-marathon participant: “Why I decided to run is to distract myself from what’s going on in Ukraine, from the two very difficult years the country has lived through.”

Organizers say they will use the donations to buy medical equipment for a children’s hospital. They managed to raise around 4,000 US dollars during the last month.
