Anderson Cooper, local charity to donate ballistic vests to local K-9s

Days after a suspect shot and killed a Norfolk Police K-9, a local charity says it’s making his death part of a national campaign.

Virginia Beach based Spike’s K-9 Fund says CNN’s Anderson Cooper has donated his speaking fee for his upcoming “Norfolk Forum” speech to be held on Jan. 26 to the K-9 Krijger Ballistic Vest Campaign.

“I was pretty blown away, and it’s going to allow us to do a lot … because of his celebrity we’re getting a lot of exposure nationally,” said retired Navy Seal James “Jimmy” Hatch, who started Spike’s K-9 Fund after his service dog took a bullet for him in the midst of a gunfight overseas.

Cooper’s donation will provide $2,200 ballistic vests for all K-9s in Norfolk, as well as vests for K-9s in other cities in Hampton Roads.

“It’ll protect the K-9 from getting shot with any kind of handgun rounds,” said Hatch. “It’s unfortunate that we had it happen here locally, but it’s probably brought attention to just how valuable they are and just how important it is that we take care of them.”

Police plan to honor fallen K-9 Krijger with a funeral next week.
