Bridgestone Invitational, Northern Ohio Golf Charities announce $1.2 million in donations

The World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and Northern Ohio Golf Charities are making another seven-figure contribution to local nonprofits.

The groups announced on Wednesday, May 11, that the 2015 Bridgestone Invitational raised $1,223,419 for 47 Northeast Ohio charities.

The Northern Ohio Golf Charities Foundation has partnered with professional golf tournaments at Firestone Country Club in Akron for more than 50 years. During that time, more than $25 million has been raised for local charities.

Wednesday at the Bridgestone Akron Technical Center, representatives from Bridgestone Americas Inc., the PGA Tour and the 2015 tournament’s two signature charities, Akron Children’s Hospital and UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, celebrated donations that Larry Foster, president of the Northern Ohio Golf Charities’ executive committee, said “make a significant, long-term impact on the citizens of Northeast Ohio every year.”

The LeBron James Family Foundation, which became a signature charity this year, was also recognized at Wednesday’s luncheon, as were The First Tee Chapters of Akron, Canton and Cleveland, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve, Faith in Action of Medina County, the Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland, Tarry House Inc. and WomenSafe Inc.

“Giving back to the community is at the core of what the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational is all about,” Bridgestone Invitational executive director Don Padgett III said. “The way the fans and volunteers of Northeast Ohio come together to support the event each year is remarkable. The result is helping out great causes through the region.”

In addition to the $1.22 million that was shelled out to charity, Bridgestone Americas has also made a $5,000 donation to an organization in each of the last six years. This year’s recipient of the Bridgestone Award was the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve.

This year’s tournament will be held from June 30 to July 3 at Firestone. Padgett said the shift to a holiday weekend, which was necessitated by golf’s return to the Summer Olympics, could result in an attendance spike.

Tickets for the event are available on the Bridgestone’s website, and by calling 330-644-2299.
