$15K donation to help Black River update athletic facilities

on

Officials from the Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative said a donation of $15,000 toward Black River Schools athletic facility improvements was a natural fit.

Black River is one of the cooperative’s largest consumers in terms of energy use and nearly 21 percent of the cooperative’s members live in the district — more than any other district in its service area, Lorain-Medina President Rodney “John” Eaton said in a statement.

The money will go to the Black River Schools Facility Enhancement Project, according to a news release. The district will receive $5,000 annually through 2018 from the cooperative.

Black River has announced a goal of $750,000 needed for projects that include:

an $8,000 multipurpose facility that will be used as a locker room for opposing teams as well as a practice facility for the wrestling team;

  • new surface for the track;
  • new bleachers at the football field;
  • replacing fencing around the football complex.
  • Since last year, $105,000 has been raised.

Parents formed a nonprofit organization a year ago, Superintendent Chris Clark said in a phone interview.

The Black River Facilities Commission was established after “a concerned group of parents and persons in the community” wanted to organize a way to bring in funds, he said.

Clark said there are safety issues with the athletic track, which is used by students as well as residents in the community.

“The students are catching themselves on the surface that is coming up,” he said.

Lorain-Medina serves 16,000 consumers in Medina, Lorain, Ashland, Huron and Wayne counties.
